My concept for Murakami’s adult fiction novel ‘Norwegian Wood’ took motifs and symbols from the story to create imagery that captured the themes of death and love in the book. The Japanese maple leaf covered in blood represents the sense of death that the woods held in the book. The colour palette was chosen to reflect the themes of love, lost love and death as well as the Japanese flag, where the story is set. Overall, the front and back cover communicate the story in a subtle, original way, allowing a reader to ‘read between the lines’ and work out the meaning for themselves, also intriguing them to read further.
